Dimensions 2014

Exhibits // Dimensions 2014

Sep 5 - Oct 12

Overview // It has been said that all craft is art, but not all art is craft: Craft is in the making, it is in all art forms, and craftmakers are masters at infusing beauty into everyday objects. The San Luis Obispo Museum of Art is pleased to present Dimensions, a biennial exhibition of fine craft featuring artworks created from clay, fiber, glass, metal, paper and wood by artists living in California. This handsome exhibition will be on view at the Museum of Art from September 5 to October 12, 2014.

This year’s juror is Carol Sauvion, owner of Freehand Gallery in Los Angeles, creator of the Emmy-nominated and Peabody Award-winning series, “Craft in America,” and executive director of the non-profit of the same name. Ms. Sauvion, a potter in her own right, has been championing the cause of original, handcrafted and functional works of art for over thirty years. “The arts are essential to our well-being as a nation,” she said, “and I’m gratified that California continues to be the home of artists who produce works that inspire and challenge. I look forward to seeing this eclectic and inspired group of objects in a museum setting.” Ms. Sauvion has selected 81 works from 219 entries for this year’s exhibition.

In addition to the works selected by Ms. Sauvion, the exhibition will include four additional works to honor the memory of four Central Coast Craftmakers who died recently. One piece will be shown from the works of Los Osos artists Barbara Flynn and Ken Ray, Arroyo Grande artist, Ina Mae Overman, and Templeton artist, Janine Kirkpatrick, announced Crissa Hewitt, Central Coast Craftmakers spokesperson.

Ms. Sauvion had this to say after the jurying process: "I enjoyed considering the vast and complex talents that went into the creation of the objects for Dimensions. The arts are essential to our well being as a nation and I’m gratified that California continues to be the home of artists who produce works that inspire and challenge. I look forward to seeing this eclectic and inspired group of objects in a museum setting."
