Helen Hunt Reid was born in Kansas City, Missouri then moved to Los Angeles where she earned degrees at UCLA and USC. Helen Hunt Reid taught art at Pasadena City College, was chairman of the art department during the 1950s, and managed to strengthen the foundation of the department and continued building a program that would attract the next generation of artists.
She retired in 1963 to become a member of the board of directors of the Laguna Museum of Art and lived in Laguna Beach until shortly before her death in San Luis Obispo, California on December 8, 1969.
